The 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were hosted at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles last night. Nine Tisch School of the Arts alumni were recognized for their outstanding achievements in television.

One Tisch professor received his Creative Arts Emmy at a ceremony held by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on August 21.

Solondz Nurtures His Indie Cred

IF Todd Solondz, assiduous chronicler of suburban ugliness, perversity and despair, had directed “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” what sort of movie would have invaded theaters? Would Cameron Diaz’s goofy Natalie have started a rocky romance with a man with cerebral palsy? Would Lucy Liu’s tough-as-nails Alex have attacked a Planned Parenthood office? Would Bernie Mac’s dutiful Bosley have harbored a secret sexual fetish steeped in racial taboos? These are the sorts of themes Mr. Solondz has explored in his offbeat, frequently queasy oeuvre, and so he was surprised when, in the early aughts, Drew Barrymore met with him to discuss the possibility of him overseeing the “Charlie’s Angels” sequel.

In ceremonies over the weekend, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences celebrated the winners of the 37th annual Daytime Emmy® Awards. The Daytime Entertainment Emmy® Awards are divided into the Telecast Awards and Creative Arts Awards; they recognize outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television production and are presented to individuals and programs broadcast from 2:00 AM-6:00 PM during the 2009 calendar year.

The bright lights of Broadway took to Radio City Music Hall last night for The 64th Annual Tony Awards.

New York University Tisch School of the Arts congratulates our four winners for receiving Broadway’s most sought after prize:

Mr. Washington made history last night, along with best actress Viola Davis, as the first time a Tony was awarded to two black performers in a play for the same theatre season. He was also the first black actor to win for a leading role in a play since James Earl Jones won in 1987 — for the original Fences, playing the same role, Troy Maxson.

The Washington Square News reports that Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo (’01 BFA, Kanbar Institute of Film and Television) has released her first feature film. The star studded cast of the film, titled After.Life, includes actors Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci.

Will Canon’s Brotherhood

On March 16, 2010, the Jury and Audience Award-winners of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival were announced at the Festival’s closing Awards Ceremony in Austin, Texas.

With its world premiere in the narrative competition at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival, Brotherhood, scored the Audience Award in its category. The film was blessed with the great talent of Tisch alumni collaborating with fellow NYU alumni.

The concept for this movie (a fraternity initiation ritual gone terribly awry) originated from the plot of Will Canon’s award-winning junior level NYU short film project, Roslyn, made in 2000. Brotherhood is one of only eight films from 831 submissions selected for narrative competition at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.

Tisch alumni continued their winning streak during the 2010 awards season. Oscars and Independent Spirit Awards were bestowed upon Tisch alumni in the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television for their cinematic achievements.

Tisch School of the Arts’ alumnus Geoffrey Fletcher ’99 (MFA, Kanbar, Film) scored an Oscar for Adapted Screenplay for Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, as well as  an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay for the same film.

Fletcher was joined by fellow Kanbar Institute alumni Juan Jose Campanella ’78 (MFA, Kanbar, Film), who received the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, El secreto de sus ojos; and at the Independent Spirit Awards, Joel Coen ’78 (BFA, Kanbar, F&TV) took home the Robert Altman Award for A Serious Man.
